In 2004, I took a leave of absence and worked as a freelance
photography with Corbis, a photo agency. The first month in India
was filled with doubt, uncertainty and a lot of failures. Eventually,
thanks to people who went out of their way to help me, things began
to get better. Specifically, a UNC student named Samkit Shah (who
was living in India at the time). Thanks especially to the Associated
Press staff photographers Rafiq Maqbool and Yasin Dar for allowing
me to live and work along with them, and the other journalists in India
as well. They don't get enough credit for the support they've given to
countless foreign journalists.
I returned again in 2005, and spent much of my that time in Kashmir.
None of this would have been possible without the stunning
kindess of strangers who became friends.
The images stem from New Dehli region, the Thar
Desert, and most influencially for me - Kashmir.
