Gloria Morin was dying in the summer of 2002 from inoperable lung cancer. At the same time,
I had recently spoken with hospice officials in Durham, North Carolina about doing an end of life
documentary. The hospice staff connected me with her family for an initial meeting. We all agreed
on doing the story, but the driving factor was Gloria, who wanted her story told.
We began thinking we would have at least a few months together, but her health rapidly took a
turn for the worse. The images from this project chronicle her final month, surrounded by her husband,
Mike, children and other family members. Ultimately, Gloria passed away and Mike allowed me to document
the night of her death.
One night, while she was getting treatment, Gloria looked up to me and told me how much she cared
about me, and how much doing this story meant to her. We both cried alone in her bedroom; it is a
moment I will never forget. I always want people to know this part of her tenderness when
seeing these images, especially the ones around her decline and death.
